So you’re looking for CrossFit gear, huh?

This article will give you an overview of the key types of crossfit gear so you can determine which type of gear for CrossFit is best for your needs – and ultimately get the most out of your WOD.

Remember, for each of the types of crossfit gear I have mentioned below, I have a complete article dedicated to each of them. So please feel free to look at the side-bar to your right and click on the full article.

Crossfit Shoes

I strongly believe that the most important item of of crossfit gear is a pair of crossfit shoes.  At the end of the day, they’re the type of crossfit clothing that is most unique to crossfit.  Your normal runners, or even a pair of cons, can disadvantage you (or even lead to injury).

The essential properties of a Crossfit shoe are as follows.

1) Minimal (or even zero) heel to toe drop.  This is to make the shoe as natural as possible.  Your feet doesn’t have a heel to toe drop, so your shoe shouldn’t either.  If you have a raised heel it causes you to strike your heel when you hit the ground, which causes a raft of foot and joint problems.  Don’t do it.   The best zero heel to toe drop shoe out on the market at the moment is the Inov-8 Bare-XF 210.  Check them out at Rogue.

The Inov-8 Bare-XF 210 were specifically designed for CrossFit. Most importantly, they have a ZERO heel to toe drop.

2) Next look for crossfit specific features.  In particular these include a rope guard, which is basically rubber on the side of the shoe which helps you climb ropes in your WOD. Another feature of a good crossfit shoe is a sticky rubber sole.  These help when doing box jumps or Olympic lifts where grip is important.

3)Comfort and durability. These are VERY important. However, I mentioned them last because they are features you want in any sports shoe.  You don’t want your feet to hurt and you don’t want your shoes to fall apart shortly after you purchase them.

The best shoes on the market currently are the Inov-8 Bare-XF 210.  They have all of the features I have mentioned above. They have zero heel to toe drop, they have a sticky role AND a rope guard, and they are comfortable and high quality (durable).  If you want to find out about other models of crossfit shoes check out my crossfit shoes article. Keep in mind that it was written before the bare-x came out.

Crossfit shorts

Crossfit shorts are another important type of crossfit gear.      There are a few important features you want to look for in crossfit shorts.

1) Maximum range of motion.  You want to be able to move around as much as possible when your squatting, jumping, running, dead lifting etc etc.  You don’t want them pulling on you

2) Breathable fabric.  You want it to be made from some sort of self-drying/wicking fabric.

3) Anitmicrobial if possible.  A lot of fabrics these days have anti-microbial properties, which basically means it stops it smelling funky! If you don’t want to have to wash your shorts after every WOD – and who does? – then these will be great for you.

The two types of shorts that I most recommend are Jaco’s hybrid training shorts and Reebok’s X-Functional Board Shorts.  Check either of them out and you’ll be set for a great WOD. They’re great additions to your collection of CrossFit gear. Remember, if you want to read more about this topic, read the full article on crossfit shorts

CrossFit T Shirts

The third type of crossfit gear I’ll be covering is crossfit t shirts.  CrossFitters love collecting crossfit tees, and I’m no exception.  Personally I like collecting crossfit gear from other crossfit affiliates.  Ive found that Zazzle has some good ones. I also just like collecting funny crossfit t shirts and crossfit t shirts that just plain look cool! Reebok has some great crossfit shirts, so you check them out here.

Remember to check out the full crossfit tees article as well.

Crossfit Skins and Compression Tights

When people think about CrossFit gear, a lot of people think about skins or compression tights.  You might be wondering whether it’s just a gimmick, but there have actually been a few recent scientific studies which indicate that skins really do help with your performance.  In particular, they’re great for helping the recovery process. Let’s face it, after an intense WOD, you’re hurting (or at least you should be!!) and any advantage you can obtain in accelerating that recovery process is going to be worth it.

The best line of compression tights are from Skins or Under Armour.  Amazon actually carries a great line of compression products from these brands.  Check them out here.

Studies show that compression tights such as these shorten recovery time

Crossfit Gloves

The final type of crossfit gear I’ll be looking at are gloves for crossfit.   It’s definitely debatable whether or not you should use crossfit gloves.  Some will strongly argue that since you don’t wear gloves in real life, you shouldn’t wear gloves at your box.  However, at the end of the day, having ripped and bleeding hands suck, and it’s more than understandable that you may want to wear gloves.  In fact, at the crossfit games, many athletes wear gloves… so if the top crossfit athletes in the world wear them, why can’t we wear crossfit gloves as well?

A great new innovative design in crossfit gloves are from New Grip.

One of the most useful items of CrossFit clothing are CrossFit shorts and there are several features you should look for when purchasing a pair.

CrossFit shorts should facilitate maximum range of motion

The most essential and the defining feature of any good CrossFit shorts are slits or stretch seams for easy movement and increased range of motion.

Whether you’re doing squats, dead lifts, snatches or cleans, you want to ensure your range of motion in not impeded by your shorts. Unfortunately, a lot of conventional shorts are made from rigid fabrics or just have poor design so that they pull and bunch when  doing big lifts.

Jaco (above) make excellent CrossFit shorts.  The 4-way stretch fabric and unique compression waist system facilitate excellent mobility while providing a comfortable no-slip fit.

CrossFit shorts should be breathable and quick drying

When you’re completing an intense WOD, you’re going to get sweaty. In fact, if you’re not dripping with sweat, something is probably wrong! It makes sense then to wear shorts with good ventilation. This comes in the form of vents and breathable materials.Similarly, it’s important that your shorts are made from wicking material that draw the moisture from your body and then subsequently dry quickly. There’s nothing worse than having your shorts stay wet for days after your workout!

A great additional feature of some CrossFit shorts are antimicrobial fabrics for

odour control. Antimicrobial fabrics prevent the bacteria from growing that release all those nasty smells. It’s nice to be able to use your shorts a few times between washes and with antimicrobial properties in the fabric it will enable you to do that without smelling up the gym!

CrossFit shorts for women are different from those designed for men

The main difference between women’s and men’s CrossFit shorts are the design.
The functional properties on the other hand are essentially the same. Men tend to wear shorts that resemble board shorts or MMA fight shorts.Women on the other hand, wear shorts that resemble bike shorts or capris.

Rebbok capris

If you want CrossFit shorts specifically designed for women, Reebok (above) are your best bet. Reebok make some great capris for women, which have the same functional properties of excellent CrossFit shorts.  Lululemon (above) make very stylish shorts that, although not designed specifically for CrossFit, have essentially the same properties and will make excellent shorts for any WOD. Finally, Jaco (below), have some great ‘booty shorts’ that are made from flexible and quick drying materials, perfect for a CrossFit workout.

There are several other features to look for in CrossFit shorts that are desirable, but not essential

  • A zipperless fly (velcro) for comfort and safety
  • Flat seams for chaffing resistance.
  • Pockets for a stop watch or keys. It’s important to have at least one pocket to store something, even if it’s just on your way to the box.
  • Draw string so that you can change the size the size of your shorts as you change the shape of your body!
  • Water drainage, which makes it good if you want it to double up as a swimsuit/bathers.

Do Reebok CrossFit shoes stand up to the hype?

Reebok CrossFit shoes are probably the best known line of CrossFit shoes on the market today; Athletes wear them in the CrossFit Games and logging more than 18 months in research and design, they were the world’s first shoes designed by and for CrossFitters.   But are they really any good? And if so, what makes them so? This post will outline the two types of Reebok CrossFit shoes – the CrossFit Nano and the CrossFit OLY – pointing out their strengths and weaknesses.  Ultimately, you’ll find out why Reebok CrossFit shoes are, in fact, great shoes, and more importantly, which model is best for your needs.

Reebok CrossFit OLY

Reebok makes two models of CrossFit shoes, the CrossFit Nano and the CrossFit OLY Lifter.

Reebok Crossfit Nano shoes are an ideal ‘all round’ CrossFit shoe

First up for examination are the Reebok Nanos. The Nano packs in a number of features to help you reach your maximum CrossFit potential. First, and most importantly, this Reebok CrossFit shoe has a minimalist design. As you would have read in the other CrossFit Shoes articles on the site, you want your running style to be as natural as possible, and a minimal heel to toe drop is essential for this.

The next great feature, and something that definitely distinguishes it from its competitors is the roomy toe box.  Several CrossFitters have commented that other available CrossFit shoes tend to cramp their toes or make them feel uncomfortable at the very least, and the Reebok Nano really delivers in this area.  Two other very important features of any great CrossFit shoe are comfort and durability, and the Reebok CrossFit Nano shoes also delivers on these. The shoe has plenty of mesh to ensure breathe-ability and comfort, and the toes are protected by a “DuraGrip Toe Cap”, which reinforces areas prone to wear and tear from excessive push-ups, weighted planks and burpees.

crossfit shoes

Notice the roomy toe box, mesh and toe cap

Finally, there is the U-Form technology, which is what makes the Nano truly remarkable. Reebok offers U-Form technology in several models of shoes; simply heat up the shoe (depending on the instructions, using either with an oven or a hairdryer), put them on and lace them tightly for a performance-enhancing, custom fitting shoe. This U-Form sole also includes an optimized gripping pattern, perfect for rope climbing along the interior arch, as well as a “landing pad” at the balls of the feet.

So is there anything wrong with this Reebok CrossFit Shoe? Well, one shortcoming of the Reebok Nano is the shoelaces. Reebok might have taken minimalism a little too far with the undersized laces. Another consideration is that the uber stiff construction of the U-Form sole cannot grip wet surfaces nor is it meant for long distance running. But, how often does your WOD involve a 10 mile run in the rain, anyway? You should probably have other shoes for that!

In summary, the Reebok CrossFit Nano are excellent CrossFit shoes for all round performance. They will help you excel in everything from box jumps and rope climbs to dead lifts and snatches.

Reebok CrossFit OLY shoes are excellent for big lifts

For CrossFitters focusing more on weightlifting than anything else, the Reebok CrossFit OLY shoe has been designed with your needs in mind. OLY’s design considers all the important aspects of weightlifting and uses them to create a superior weightlifting shoe available to men and women. Just like the Nano, the OLY has U-Form technology that provides a custom fit without much arch support or heel cup.

Distinguishing itself from other weightlifting and Crossfit shoes, the Reebok OLY is incredibly lightweight thanks to a less pronounced heal and carbon rubber sole. Despite each shoe weighing at least 2.4 ounces less than competitors, OLY still maintains a stable to heel and an effective heel height of 0.75 inches. And while on the subject of the carbon fiber sole, OLY offers superior grip on nearly every type of surface; the unique pyramid-shaped indentions around the outer heel have been added to assist with gripping and climbing rope. In terms of Reebok CrossFit gear, OLY delivers on the hype.

So what are the downsides? Well, the exterior of the shoe is comprised of synthetic suede and full grain leather at the toe. Perhaps the biggest gripe about the shoe is the leather toe since softer leather is notorious for wearing down quicker. However, this is quite easy to get around.  Simply avoid getting the leather wet, or air-dry immediately if OLY’s come in contact with water and voilà, a major flaw becomes inconsequential.

In sum, the OLY is best viewed as a CrossFit weightlifting shoe. At the end of the day, a show can’t be the best at everything, and if you’re doing a WOD that’s heavy on lifting exercises (and there are plenty of them), this is your best bet.  If you’re really serious about CrossFit, it’s a great idea to have two pairs of CrossFit shoes.  The Nano for all round WODs and the OLY for WODS that focus on lifting.

Both the Nano and the OLY are stylish and attractive

Before we finish off, it’s important to point out that Reebok CrossFit shoes simply look great! Obviously, the most important function of your CrossFit gear is performance, but there’s nothing wrong with looking good in the process.  The Reebok CrossFit Nano seamlessly combines the two; it’s one of the most stylish and chic CrossFit shoes around. Men have the option of choosing from the following colors: yellow and black; black and silver; red and black; and white, black and blue. The ladies’ Nano is available in four fantastic color ways— pink and grey; pink and white; grey, white and black; and yellow and blue.

OLY is a high performance-lifting shoe that doesn’t look too shabby either. The Reebok OLY will give you the edge you need to outperform your former self and look good doing it too. The men’s version of the shoe is available in black and red. Women have the option to choose from white and black or purple and grey.

Notice the Nano's range of attractive styles

 And the verdict is

Reebok made the bold claim that it has produced a line of superior CrossFit shoes, and their claim is backed by products thoroughly researched, experimented with and improved upon.  The Nano is a great all round CrossFit shoe, and the OLY is ideal for WODs that are heavy on lifts.
